So where does the novice start to learn trading on the exchanges?
There are a number of exchange trading learning sources available from books to training courses or by simply learning it yourself. I started of by attending multiple courses and one to one courses and these were excellent but you pay for what you get. Another option is to use exchange trading forums but in my opinion the basic trading advice and templates available on these forums are free but provide very little. They just present a skeleton framework to work with and build on but you still have to do the hard work in the end. You can end up with more questions than answers when you have visited these forums and can become overwhelmed. I personally think you should work it out for yourself from the start as you have the benefit of a clean sheet and are not led down the garden path on the start of your trading journey. One thing I learned with trading was that many successful fellow traders give very little away and this can be very frustrating. They might give the odd snippet of useful information on these forums but not enough to give you a fighting chance of making it work for you. If it was that easy to make a living trading the exchanges then everyone would be doing it, playing golf in the morning trading in the afternoon oh what a life!
So how do we learn to trade the exchanges?
1. Courses
As mentioned earlier there are some excellent companies who offer training courses and one to one courses. I used the great company called Bet Angel for all of my training back in 2007 and this certainly did give me a firm base to start from. But do not think this will give you success on a plate you have to practice and feel the pain of losing money you have to earn the right of passage! I always think you learn faster when you lose money as you seem to remember the situation that caused you the pain.
2. Learn on your own.
This is no easy task unless you are naturally gifted or you are from a financial trading background or pick things up quickly. You will certainly need trading software that interfaces to the various exchanges like Betfair where you can practise trading in simulation mode without losing real money and have the one click functionality for speed of trade execution. There are many trading tool applications out there just look at the Betfair App directory, see link below. A word of caution when trading in simulation or test mode the market does not always react the same as the real live market so take this into account moving forward to live mode. Another helpful tip is not dwell on simulation or test mode too long you have to cut your teeth sooner or later with real money, the fastest way to learn.

In my opinion I believe the exchange trading application Bet Angel is the best out there and the one I personally use. It has continually matured over the last 14 years. It is reasonably priced and they provide excellent support and you will need it when starting off learning to trade the sports exchanges.
Regardless of whether you take courses or you start learning from scratch, remember these points they will stand you in good stead moving forward.
• Take notes every day for every horse race you trade. You can use these for identifying mistakes and good points from your trading. Learn from your mistakes and build on the positives!
• Concentrate on one sports market and keep it simple.
• Do not apply one trading strategy to all markets it will not work. There is a strategy for every market and market for every strategy.
• If you are trading pre race off do not go in-play to recover a negative or red position hoping your current situation will be resolved in other words go green. Please note the trading strategy described in this book is in-play, more on this strategy later.
• Do not chase losses.
Finally keep in charge of your emotions!
