Cheltenham Gold Cup 2026

The Cheltenham Gold Cup 2026 is not my favourite race but it is the blue ribbon event of the march festival. From a horse form analysis perspective, it is a challenge quite simply in terms of the following factors,

Age, Experience, Stamina, Class, Speed, jockey positional tactics and Jumping is the name of the game.

Collating this information in flight when reading the horse form is no simple task and involves absorbing high penalty values and varying race distances in a horse’s career.
This is just the tip of the horse form iceberg.

If we look at a classic horse like Denman from the past a previous Gold Cup winner and a grinder of the opposition at that. The horse that was a legend and was the tank that had it all and ran from the front that smashed the opposition plus met all the above criteria. The horse Kauto Star is not my cup of tea too fragile in stature in my opinion, and I like bully boys in these types of events. I like a horse that will eyeball the others and play catch me if you can! 

In my opinion Denman shouted class and was like a street fighter winning some handicaps off lung bursting weights, take a look sometime at past races.
Horses that attack fences at speed when the lungs and heart are at full capacity and still find more when the jockey goes into the drive position at the end of a race is hard to comprehend.

I think the early stages of a Gold Cup where a false pace is set because every jockey is trying to outsmart each other can be dangerous.

 Slow speed plus stiff fences and horses idling into fences is a fall maker! I am no jockey, but I have seen this so many times.
I know jockeys have to watch the elastic band judge this stretch to perfection in terms of staying. When I say elastic band I mean can the horse get home. So, I am probably  waffling on here but we must put this race in context it requires the best qualities of a horse to shine though on the day and remember it looks easy on TV but it is not!
I have seen horses switch on the turbo like Neptune Collonges and stay on at the end eating up the ground on the hill, but I might be wrong here as age is catching up with me!
Enough of the intro here and lets us get down to the form analysis and this is a fascinating Gold Cup race and it has a couple of horses on their way to their pensions and a deserved retirement in the field beckons and so they should.

There is a younger one like Iknowthwayurthinkin on the rise and a good horse indeed. But this horse is not for me. Last years Gold Cup 2025 were it competed in was weak in statue, and this is my opinion. I will not name horses in the race that diluted it as this is disrespectful to the owners.

So, I will scratch Iknowthwayurthinkin as it took advantage of a weak race last year. But watch it will probably make me look stupid!

Galopin Des Champs a favourite of mine in the past but the last run left me a bit deflated, personally in my opinion I think father time and wear mileage are catching up with it. A gold cup takes a lot out of a horse, and you just do not press the button on horses all the time and expect it to win.

Onto our next horses many of the top of the market have been running at inadequate distances and some on flat tracks. How can they stay an uphill finish on an undulating course at speed like Cheltenham? Their legs turn to jelly and wander up the hill drunk not literally!

Quite simply some will finish placed as pure adrenalin will get them home and a jockey will carry then home earning their riding fee and the place money commission!
Some horses will wave the white flag once that hill rise starts on the home run on the last circuit to the finishing line. The last fence is a gut wrencher but brilliant to watch and horses can gain ground at this fence.

The horses mentioned just before at the top of the market in the betting second tier that will not wave the white flag are Gaelic Warrior and Jango Baie. Now on paper Jango baie looked a bit week at Kempton Boxing Day but this was a flat track and I like this horse. The stats are against, but the horse intrigues me here and I just cannot ignore it.
Now you think is it a bet at that price? 

No but I think class will get this home into a place, but the odds indicate a strong run from Jango Baie and it might not run its Ante-post remember.

So, I will stick my neck out here and take a chance they will run Lecky Watson and Fastorslow. 

Lecky Watson is my favoured one against the other selection Fastorslow I have been tracking Lecky Watson for some while. Lecky Watson impresses me and I think the only chink in its armour is that the novice race grade 1 it ran was it strong enough. 
This Lecky Watson has touched a nerve, and I think we have some pretty good class here. 
The horse Fastorslow is a 9 year old so that is a slight negative.

Lecky Watson is my idea for the Gold Cup but what do I know!
